Southeastern Regional Conformation Show,
Breed Survey and Club Trial

By Richard Agee

March 17-19, 2006 the Carolina German Shepherd Working Dog Club hosted the Southeastern Regional Conformation Show, Breed Survey and Club Trial. German Körmeister Ernst Rückert judged the entire event. The conformation show and breed survey and Schutzhund trial were held at the Statesville Park & Soccer Complex (site of 2003 NASS). Mr. Tom Wilson was gracious enough to allow the use of his land for the tracking. The day of the trial the air was crisp but the ground was very dry. This did not stop the dogs from finding their way through each track and all three passed with Tobi Elbel and her dog Heiko vom Schloss Ludwig high in tracking with 88 points. The trial continued with the obedience work for the Schutzhund dogs. Each dog passed their obedience with Ben “Blitz” von Country Oak handled by his owner Wayne Speaks scoring 87 points for high obedience. After a short break the protection phase began. Each dog and handler team performed very well again with Wayne and Blitz having a high protection score of 94 points. When the scores were totaled, Wayne and Blitz were HIGH IN TRIAL with 266 points. Congratulations to all for a job well done.

Lunch was provided by Chick-fil-A of Statesville and after a short break the Begleithundprüfung (BH) was ready to start. There were three dogs that performed the BH obedience with two passing to go onto part B and both passed. Congratulations to Christina Reppert with Karus vom Fiemereck and Miguel Elguera with Bosko von Eboschi.

The rest of the afternoon Josh Scutt was available to work dogs in the protection phase and help exhibitors prepare for the Breed Survey. Josh is a Nationally Certified Helper for the GSDCA-WDA. He is an excellent helper and everyone enjoyed watching his work. This is the second year Josh has been gracious enough to do “helper work” at our show.

The rest of the evening was spent at the Holiday Inn eating, talking dogs and enjoying the company of friends around the bar. An early check-in was available and the judge was available to speak with the exhibitors. His English is excellent and all had a great time.

Saturday was another beautiful day and the Breed Survey started with the weighing, measuring and checking of the teeth. The Breed Survey continued with the “protection test”. Again all got to see the excellent helper work of Josh. All dogs passed the test and all received “pronounced” in the work. Once the Breed Survey was completed a lunch break was taken with lunch provided by the club and Royal Canin for all exhibitors. This gave people time to shop with the numerous vendors. Everything needed for training and showing was available. There were also dog trailers and dog boxes custom fitted to the vehicle. The vendors were gracious enough to supply many items for the raffle as did Royal Canin. The raffle is always a lot of fun and this one was no exception. After lunch it was time for the “opening ceremony” for the Conformation Show. A moment of silence was observed in the memory of David Yost and Danny Martinez. The German and American national anthems were played and the Southeastern Regional Conformation Show was underway. The Vice President of the GSDCA-WDA, David Landau assisted Herrn Rückert in the ring along with Klaus Holder and Donna Agee. The rest of the afternoon was spent showing the puppies up to 12 months old. The first place puppies were: Franka vom Waterloo 3-6 females, Jager vom Krafthaus 3-6 males, Megan von der Noriswand 6-9 females, Yesko von den blauen Bergen 6-9 males, Jubel von Konigtum 9-12 females, Yacco von der Vallendarer Höhe 9-12 males. This completed the showing of the puppies. Saturday evening a judge’s dinner was held at Big Daddy’s restaurant and we all ate too much.

Sunday was again a great day for the weather and the exhibitors were ready to show the adults. This is an especially exciting time for all, final grooming is done and practice rounds completed with last-minute instructions for “handlers” and “doublers”.

The 12-18 females’ class had 12 entries and the gaiting took a while. When it was completed the first place went to Cherry vom Messebau. The 12-18 males had three dogs entered. The first place dog was Ebbo vom Krafthaus. The next class was the 18-24 females; the first place dog was Clarissa Blue-Iris. The 18-24 males had three entries and the first place went to Jackson von Premutia. The next class was the adult without title. The first place female was Zina vom Haus Brezel and the first place male was Bax vom Waldschlösschen. There were three males shown in the Veterans Class, Kerry vom Torberg, Gerry vom Lebenshunger and Fox von der Bildeiche. Three very nice dogs and a joy to watch gait.

The excitement was building for the Working Class and the females were called to the ring. Ten females were entered and eight were shown. All of the females received the “V” rating. The competition was tough and when it was complete Bunny von der Noriswand was the winner and this year’s Southeastern Regional Siegerin. The overall quality of this class was excellent. The trophies for the working dogs were special and the winners were quite pleased.

Next came the working males. There were 14 dogs entered and eight were shown. Seven males received the “V” rating. When all the gaiting was completed the winner was Saro aus Agrigento.

You may wish to visit the club website at www.CGSWDC.com for all unofficial results and link to Work of Art by Lynn for photos.

Exhibitors came from nearly every state on the East Coast from New Hampshire to Florida. Many people had 12 or more hours to drive. Walter Kötters and his son Frankie came from Germany to handle. If you have ever watched Walter handle you know he is an “expert handler” and I couldn’t help but think the apple does not fall far from the tree as I watched Frankie handle.

The total entry was 120 and the overall quality was excellent. We would like to thank all who came and hope to see you back again soon.
